How Divorce Shaped Lenny Kravitz and His Enduring Affection for Ex Lisa Bonet

Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet married in 1987 and had their daughter, Zoë, in 1988. They divorced in 1993 but remained dedicated co-parents, even though Zoë lived in Topanga, California, with her mother.

In his Black History Month cover story with People, the "Fly Away" singer highlighted the key choices he and Bonet made to maintain a positive co-parenting relationship.

“I’m very proud of not only how Zoë came out, but how we did it,” Lenny began. “We did it without lawyers and all that madness. We did it as a family, with love.”

The entertainment multi-hyphenate added.

“We did it with understanding and being able to handle our own business without getting others involved. That is what Let Love Rule is,” he said of his debut album, which was heavily inspired by Bonet. “It’s when you remove ego and all of the other elements and do what you’re supposed to do.”

Kravitz revealed how his breakup with Lisa affected him.

In his autobiography, Lenny Kravitz recounts the moment he overheard his father, NBC producer Sy Kravitz, in a phone conversation with a woman he realized was his mistress, leaving him profoundly disillusioned.

When he told him he was devastated by the conversation, his father told him he would end up doing the same thing when he grew up.

Lenny said: “He became right. After the marriage (to Lisa Bonet), I became more like him. I was becoming a player.

“I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to be that guy. So I had to tackle that and it took years.”

When asked how he achieved the adjustment, he said: “By taking responsibility. Discipline. Not letting my own desires take over.”

Lenny Kravitz says he still loves Lisa Bonet

Kravitz told People that despite their divorce, their feelings for each other have remained, and they have found a way to fit these feelings into a new way of life consciously.

“The love doesn’t leave you, but it has to find a new way to funnel itself into a new life. We consciously wanted to do that. It took time, believe me, but she is a part of my life that will never leave my heart, my soul or my spirit. I am what I am because of our experience."

The “Fly Away” singer fondly remembered the time he and the ‘Angel Heart’ actress had their daughter Zoë, in 1988, and how beautiful it was.

He said: “We were quite the family. We had our own groove, expression, fashion.

“It was a beautiful time. The world Zoë’s mom and I were creating, our family, it was about peace, love and spirit.”
