Angelina Jolie has recently disclosed how the words of a former partner had a profound impact on her confidence as a singer.
In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she initially hesitated to sing in the biopic “Maria,” wherein she embodies the influential opera singer Maria Callas. This hesitation stemmed from the negative opinions about her vocal abilities expressed by her ex-partner.
”It was an out-of-body experience because I don’t sing.
“I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing.
“I’d been to theatre school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me. I just kind of adapted to this person’s opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing.”
Last week, “Maria” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where Jolie was moved to tears by an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience.
Although reviews for the film have been mixed, Jolie’s performance has been praised as “career-defining,” and many believe she could receive an Oscar nomination.
The film, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, also stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Pierfrancesco Favino
